Extras Christmas Special

by Charles Pooter

Being a fan of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's Extras, I'm looking forward to the feature-length Christmas specials that are to be shown later this year (yes, at Christmas). I found the following video announcement of the specials, which I nicked from Gervais' website, particularly amusing:

Warning: contains profanity!

Yes, I encountered this piece a while back, when I saw it on The Guardian's site.

The Guardian got it into it's head that this was a direct response to their slating here, and so were flattered by the article here.

Whatever the truth of the story, it does serve to suggest that when it comes to ad-libbing, Gervais is floundering without Merchant to play his straight man. This is funny, but primarily because of Merchant.

I think it unfair to criticise Gervais. His rant in this clip is hilarious. I agree that he is better when interacting with others than in his lone standup, but when he is doing stuff with other people (his sitcoms, The Ricky Gervais Show, etc) he is very funny indeed.

Also you can't call Merchant a "straight man", their comedy partnership is more nuanced than that.

Ricky Gervais is so funny. Just something about him. Great timing, subtle expressions, short and fat body etc. A true legend in his own lunchtime.
